Symposium Overview

The symposium will present up-to-date information on a variety of cancer care topics, including ovarian cancer diagnostics, genomics in cancer care, lung cancer screening, the role of rehabilitation in managing pain and fatigue, malnutrition in the cancer patient, biosimilar basics, burnout prevention for healthcare providers, and opioid use.

Distinguished faculty from MD Anderson Cancer Center, Loyola University, Georgia Tech, and the Northside Hospital Cancer Institute (NHCI) will present on diverse topics relating to caring for patients with cancer. NHCI has been offering cancer care services since 1975 and is one of the largest, most respected oncology care providers in Atlanta. NHCI is known for combining the clinical excellence available at large academic centers with the personalized touch of a community hospital. These NHCI faculty experts will bring that unique perspective to this program.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss trends in oncology drug spending and the biosimilar development process.
  2. Explain the role of rehab in managing pain and fatigue in the cardiothoracic patient population.
  3. State the prevalence of aberrant drug use among oncology patients, engage in a discussion on guidelines and mandates, and the benefit of implementing universal precautions into daily practice for risk stratification and management of patients with substance use disorders.
  4. Describe the Bundling Interventions to Enhance Pain Care Quality (BITES Pain) criteria and how to integrate this assessment into daily practice. Additionally, participants will learn how the use of the BITES Pain criteria can support safe and effective pain management for patients with cancer.
  5. Analyze current applications of genomics to cancer care, and the role of health professionals in communicating and discussing genomic results with patients and families.
  6. Discuss the clinical characteristics of malnutrition according to published standards & guidelines, recognize the importance of nutrition and addressing malnutrition in oncology patients.
  7. Identify the application of machine learning in the development of better cancer diagnostics and therapeutics as well as the use of metabolites as biomarkers of cancer.
  8. Describe the use of mass spectrometry to monitor metabolic profiles in patient blood samples as well as the use of machine learning to identify metabolic patterns that predict early stage ovarian cancer with high accuracy (specificity and sensitivity).

This meeting has been planned and will be implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the ACCME. CME, CNE, pharmacy, physical therapy credit will also be offered.
